A Great Cinematic Déja-vu

A Brief Comment on the film, “Hello Betty”
John Bennison, Mountain Shadow Director

One may have to be of a certain age -- to have grown up in a certain era -- to remember the fictional character, Betty Crocker; or the real life personality, the late-Julia Child. In both cases, there is a “trans-global” tale of old.

Then there are numerous films, of late, that depict various versions of women’s emancipation from a number of earlier eras than the present; several titles to which Mountain Shadow audiences have been presented.

Most recently there was “Calle Malaga” from Morocco last October, and the Italian film in November, ’24, “There’s Still Tomorrow.” (Members can check our lending library.)

On the other hand, audience members who may also have a proclivity for the culinary arts may also certainly recall the other film we brought you just last month about another, contemporaneous, real life cooking tale, “Sweet Story.”

As I’ve often remarked -- especially for those who’ve loved watching movies for a long, long time -- we seldom encounter a plotline that isn’t somewhat familiar. Instead, it’s more a matter of recognizing how that genuine, human storyline, without it wearing out; and, importantly, how well the filmmaker’s craft delivers it to us.

I hope perhaps you’ll appreciate and respond positively to this latest film with your own greeting, “Well, hello Betty -- whoever you truly are this time!” jb
